Two large ear trumpets, placed opposite each other, in the middle of a meadow – and enough space between them for visitors to squeeze in. By doing so, they will be able to dive into amplified sounds of nature which were imperceptible before – all in contrast with the surroundings’ apparent silence. Whoever is at the centre of this massive installation will experience their own fragility while at the same time feeling larger than life. “Fragile silence” can, to a certain extent, give wings to human beings, and give a voice to what usually has no voice because it is seen first, rather than heard. The artwork by Arturs Punte and Jekabs Volatovskis is a recognisable reference for an acoustic localizer invented for early identification of planes during World War I. It therefore represents an admonishment to humanity: it must be aware of process which are larger than can be comprehended. Conflict can manifest even if peace seems to reign supreme. It is up to the person who sits there to make a good and responsible use of it.

Due grandi coni acustici sono posti l’uno di fronte all’altro, al centro uno spazio dove il visitatore può prendere posto. Compiendo quest’azione si avrà la possibilità di immergersi nei rumori amplificati e prima impercettibili che la natura può offrire, in contrasto con l’apparente silenzio del paesaggio. Chiunque si trovi al centro di questa grande installazione può avvertire – in quel momento - la propria fragilità, sentendosi al contempo più grande della vita stessa.
“Fragile silence” è in grado, in un certo senso, di dare le ali all’essere umano, di dare voce a ciò che solitamente non ce l’ha perché percepito prima con la vista che con l’udito. La forma dell’opera di Arturs Punte e Jekabs Volatovskis è un riferimento riconoscibile a un localizzatore acustico inventato per il rilevamento precoce degli aerei durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Rappresenta quindi anche un monito all’uomo ad essere vigile di fronte a processi che sono più grandi di lui: perfino nella pace apparente può manifestarsi il pericolo del conflitto. Sta alla scelta responsabile di chi si siede farne buon uso.

Zwei große Schalltrichter, gegenüber aufgestellt, in der Mitte einer Wiese - und für die BesucherInnen gerade noch genug Platz, um sich dazwischen zu drängen. Wenn man das tut, hat man die Möglichkeit in den verstärkten Klang der Natur einzutauchen, was vorher nicht wahrnehmbar war - alle dies im Kontrast zur scheinbaren Stille der Umgebung. Wer auch immer im Zentrum dieser massiven Installation steht, wird auch ihre/seine eigene Zerbrechlichkeit erfahren, während man gleichzeitig das Leben als größere Instanz erahnt „Fragile silence“ kann, bis zu einem gewissen Punkt, den Menschen Flügel verleihen, und etwas eine Stimme geben, das gewöhnlich keine hat, weil es eher gesehen als gehört wird. Die Arbeit von Arturs Punte und Jakes Volatovskis ist eine erkennbare Referenz an ein akustisches Lokalisiergerät, das im Ersten Weltkrieg zur frühen Identifikation von Flugzeugen erfunden worden ist. Es repräsentiert daher eine Warnung an die Menschheit: sie muss sich bewusst sein, dass Prozesse komplexer sind als man sie verstehen kann. Ein Konflikt kann sich manifestieren, auch wenn der Frieden vorherrscht. Es liegt in der Verantwortung eines jeden Einzelnen sich gut und verantwortungsvoll zu verhalten.

Inside the Fanes alp, which extends pleasantly amid the mighty mountain peaks, the Ladin legends, which took shape here, come alive. Incredible rock formations reveal surprising anthropomorphisms to the curious visitor. A stop in the parliament of the marmots will enable him/her to assist in the discussions of these animals, totems of the ancient kingdom of Fanes, the rebirth of which is still awaited.

Addentrandoci nell’alpe del Fanes, che si estende amena fra imponenti massicci, si respirano appieno i miti ladini, ambientati proprio su queste alture. Mirabolanti formazioni rocciose rivelano, al viandante curioso, sorprendenti antropomorfismi. Una sosta di fronte al „parlamento delle marmotte“ gli permetterà di sentire parlare i questi animali totemici dell’antico regno die Fanes, del quale si sta tuttora aspettando la rinascita.

Die Fanes-Alm, erstreckt sich zwischen eindrucksvollen Gebirgsmassiven; hier kann man die vorhandenen ladinischen Mythen sehr wohl fühlen. Erstaunliche Felsformationen offenbaren dem neugierigen Reisenden überraschende Anthropomorphismen. Eine Rast beim Parlament der Murmeltiere ermöglicht es ihm, den Diskussionen dieser totemischen Tiere über das antike Reich der Fanes beizuwohnen, auf dessen Wiedergeburt man noch immer wartet.
