Location Ju de Sant’Antone.

Every spring and at the end of each summer, the transhumance passes over the Passo Sant'Antonio (in Ladin, 'Ju de Sant Antone', 2,466 m a.s.l.): the seasonal migration of cattle from the village of La Val to the mountain pastures of Fanes and then back down to the stables of the farms at the bottom of the valley. This tradition has been going on for centuries and right at the pass stands a wooden chapel dedicated to St Anthony, the protector of animals. Even today, people and animals in La Val must endure the considerable effort of the ascent (and descent) across the steep scree slopes of this pass. Any help, including that of the saints, is welcome!
Transhumance is such an ancient and transnational element that in 2019 UNESCO, following an Italian, Austrian and Greek candidature, included this tradition in its list of the World Heritage of Intangible Culture, i.e. the knowledge, traditions, folklore, customs, beliefs and languages that are an integral part of the cultural heritage of a place and that UNESCO protects because they are 'fundamental to maintaining cultural diversity in the face of globalisation, supporting intercultural dialogue and encouraging mutual respect for different ways of life'.

Sul passo Sant’Antonio (in ladino "Ju de Sant Antone", 2.466 m s.l.m) transita, ogni primavera e al termine di ogni estate, la transumanza: la migrazione stagionale del bestiame che dal paese di La Val porta le mandrie di mucche ai pascoli montani di Fanes e poi giù nuovamente alle stalle dei masi a fondovalle. Questa tradizione si svolge da secoli e proprio al passo sorge una cappella di legno dedicata a Sant’ Antonio, il protettore degli animali. Ancora oggi persone e animali di La Val devono sopportare il notevole sforzo della salita (e della discesa) attraverso i ripidi pendii detritici di questo passo. Ogni aiuto, compreso quello dei santi, è ben accetto! La transumanza è un elemento antichissimo e transnazionale tanto che l’UNESCO nel 2019, su candidatura italiana, austriaca e greca, ha inserito questa tradizione nella lista del patrimonio mondiale di cultura immateriale, cioè le conoscenze, le tradizioni, il folclore, i costumi, le credenze e le lingue che sono parte integrante del patrimonio culturale di un luogo e che l’UNESCO tutela perchè sono “fondamentali al mantenimento della diversità culturale di fronte alla globalizzazione, al sostegno al dialogo interculturale e all’incoraggiamento al rispetto reciproco dei diversi modi di vivere”.

Jeden Frühling und am Ende des Sommers führt die Transhumanz über den Passo Sant'Antonio (auf Ladinisch "Ju de Sant Antone", 2.466 m ü.d.M.): die saisonale Wanderung des Viehs vom Dorf La Val zu den Almen von Fanes und dann wieder hinunter zu den Ställen der Bauernhöfe im Talgrund. Diese Tradition wird seit Jahrhunderten gepflegt, und direkt am Pass steht eine Holzkapelle, die dem Heiligen Antonius, dem Beschützer der Tiere, geweiht ist. Auch heute noch müssen Mensch und Tier in La Val den mühsamen Aufstieg (und Abstieg) über die steilen Geröllhalden des Passes bewältigen. Jede Hilfe, auch die der Heiligen, ist willkommen!
